Sleek and minimal gaming laptop from ASUS.

Honestly, I’m acutally not a gaming person so when I searching the laptop to buy, the spec about GPU is not the big part to consider. However, the appearance or design are something I’m looking for. Certainly Asus Zephyrus G14 is in my criteria and wish list, since it’s such a thin gaming laptop, with not much weight at almost 1.5 KG. This laptop got a minimal design with unique mini LED light on the lid which make it distinguish from other gaming machines. 🧩

The signature of this model is “Slash lighting” on the lid. No AniMe Matrix™ Display from previous gen anymore.

Mostly gaming laptops come with a good performance since it’s design for gaming. Of course performance machine come with high price tag and for this model, it’s quite high in my country (approx $1,650 for the same spec). Somehow there is a big sale in Bestbuy website, 1,299 from 1,599 USD. Fortunately, I’m lucky enough to find such a great price with excellent open-box condition, which is under 1,000 USD and that’s why I’ve no hestiation to grab it.🛒

At first I still doubt whether the condition is gonna be good as stated or not. And here it is. It looks like new and really wonderful. So let’s take a look around 🧑🏼‍💻

Ports : USB C 3.2, USB A, Micro SD card slot, Kensington lock, HDMI, USB C 4.0, USB A, Headphone jack.

Clean, Compact, and Classy 🎲

I’d say it’s a combination of size, design, and performance are what you want out of a laptop this size, which presumes you prioritize portability. You can use it at for work or business meeting, it does not give you a look of gamer. For me it’s minimal design remind me to Razer brand in Windows side. While it also looks like MacBook Pro with CNC aluminum chassis and clean design, and good quality speakers. Eventhough the MacBook is still better but this is first time windows laptop ever getting actually a good macbook level spearkers. As it’s in my hand, I’d say the build quality may not par macbook yet. For me, I’m not an Apple fan but there is no windows laptop ever reached that but this is closest I’ve seen in such price range.

GeForce RTX 4060 for this model | Side speakers arer really good.

A bit sadly that there is no Intel chip option for G14 model however the AMD Ryzen™ 9 8945HS is remarkable and it’s Ryzen™ AI chip which means there is NPU (Neural Processing Unit) to do AI jobs for you. I think it’s still great in Mid of 2024, I know for now there are many new AI generation of laptops are coming, with super high performance in AI processing and features (copilot+ pc, snapdragon x elite, etc). Even new chip from AMD (Ryzen Strix point) and Intel (Luna Lake) are trying to upgrade AI’s capability. Eventually I’m doing fine with this little AI performance, and espectially the price I got here, I don’t have much things to complain.

Wrap it up a bit about this!

If you are the gamer so this one, there is no doubt for you. But if you are not, just like me who is looking for a sleek and unique laptop so I’d say it may be a hugh expensive price tag. I’d suggest if you can find a deal around 1,000 USD (as me) then that would be a great pick. For daily task, it is like more than enough for sure. For entertainment, it’s really great since you will get a great display and speaker, you can extremely enjoy watching series and light gaming through this. Obviously, this will be my new favorite all-round laptop so far.

What I say yeah:

Elegant and compact design in aluminum case.
Gorgeous 3K OLED panel and 120Hz refresh rate display from Asus.
Speaker is almost/the same level of MacBook Pro.
Comfortable keyboard with RGB lighting (one zone)

What I say meh:

I know it’s performance CPU but I wish a battery could be longer a bit. I can do like 3–4 hrs.
USB-C 3.2 on the right side. It’d be 4.0 version as the left side. So 3.2 will offer only display port 1.4 and G-Sync. If you need power delivery, you have to use 4.0 on the left side only.
No print screen button, so you have to set other custom buttons to do this job and it’s not that comfortable as dedicated one.

Alternative 14" slim gamaing laptop?

Actually there are couple models of 14 inches gaming laptop, such as, Lenovo Legion 14" or Acer Predator Helios Neo 14". But they will you a look of real gamer and that is not what I’m looking for. Hence, I come with with some options if Zephyrus G14 still not catch your eyes.

HP Omen Transcend 14" 2024

Omen Transcend 14 is nice! Almost the same spec with Zephyrus G14 but under the hood, it runs with Intel Core Ultra 9. It’s little bit heavier (1.65 vs 1.5 KG). Price range is the same level which is around 1,600 USD. Omen will give more gamer appearance and 4 zones of RGB keyboard. Still it looks modern, slim, and portable.

2. Razer Blade 14" 2024

Blade 14" is stellar, runs with Ryzen 9 as same as Zephyrus G14. I think Asus try to be Blade 14" with slim and minimalist design but packed with performance. It comes with a good IPS panel and per key RGB lighting, and also an option of GPU NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 4060 or 4070 like others. This is a great choice for sure but the price is extremely different, since it will cost you around 2,600 USD.
